Just retweeted your post @stevecrenshaw Read the review on Ron Edmondsons site. I have been a Christian for ten years and remember what it was like first coming to a church and hearing people talk. I now see myself doing the same thing. Will be getting the study.

I hope "begat" is in there too!

    Would love to win, Ben.

and we all get caught up in the vocabulary trap from time to time. Anything that hels us avoid the words that most people don't understand anyway is a good thing

The review of this book is intriguing. As a young adult (recent graduate with a BA in Organizational Communication!) who has been in the church all of my life and will attend seminary within the next couple of years, a new perspective on church language will be great. I also work as a part of a team that helps undergraduates explore a call in ministry through and internship, so this study could be helpful to go through with the interns.

Awesome! I would love to have a copy…

I was affected by the "lingo" of the Christian and/or church world when my eyes were opened to the possibility of there actually being a God. That was through the late Harold Hill, a physicist who, to use the words I used at the time, "actually believed this 'God' business." He mentioned salvation, as did the organizers of the "tent crusade" I was dragged to by my mother, but he never defined his term. Shame on that scientist. :) Anyhow, a Jerry Falwell message the following Memorial Day gave me the definition and the "method," and that's when I became a "King's Kid" (as Hill would've said).

I've always been sensitive to the "jargon," but sometimes I don't know of a better word. Perhaps this book would provide some … or at least give me something to think about.

If I win will take Ron Edmondson's suggestion to work it with seasoned co-facilitators in our sexual sin ministry to keep our iron sharp

Excellent review for what sounds like a great book! Love to have this in my arsenal for small groups. I retweeted under @ekda1961.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

Steve, good stuff. Sounds like you could bring great perspective/experience to a small group through this study.

5 words: The birds and the bees.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Benlreed Benlreed

Very true, Karl. Using words that people don't understand is rarely helpful.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Benlreed Benlreed

Tiffanie, I also grew up going to church…then went to seminary. I think it's tough for people who have spent so much time around believers, because in a way, we don't even realize that we're saying words that others don't have a reference for…and keeping them on the outside in the process.

I hope this study is helpful for you and those you are ministering to!

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Benlreed Benlreed

Cool connection…so you came to understand the terms more fully when you came to understand (and follow) Christ. I like it.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Benlreed Benlreed

I hope this is a study that you guys can easily implement into this ministry. I love the idea of iron sharpening iron…almost seems biblical or something (:

Where do you lead small groups, Erin?

  • http://www.christumc.org @debanto

Thanks for the vocabulary police citation! We can't be reminded too many times that we often speak a foreign language and expect our guests to translate. It is our responsibility to be hospitable and speak in the native language. Retweeted @debanto.
